On a Saturday afternoon in Chinatown you might be fortunate enough to hear the live strumming of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar. It may be unbelievable once you first hear the sound – it might stop you in your tracks, because for a second you might believe that the real Jimi Hendrix is actually playing on one of D.C.’s street corners.
Willis Plate, a 60-year-old musician, casually plays electric guitar near the Gallery Place metro stop, and his talent cannot be denied. People stop and stare, congratulating him on his work, while he closes his eyes and lets his fingers mesmerize the crowd through his guitar
Originally from the District, Plate started playing the guitar back in 1972 as a hobby. After getting injured from his previous job three years ago, Plate began playing on the streets full-time. “I play as long as I can, till the street horns blow me off the corner,” he says.
As of now Plate plans to continue playing his electric guitar all over the District, yet for now Gallery Place is his most common hit. Stroll by Chinatown sometime and check him out…it will definitely be a memorable street performing experience.
