DC Music Live had the opportunity to sit down with Kellin Quinn and Jesse Lawson from Sleeping with Sirens before the show at the Recher outside of Baltimore last week. SWS is out on the road in support of Pierce The Veil.
DCML: How has the tour been?
Kellin: It’s been great, really great. We’ve sold out every night actually.
DCML: I saw you for the first time at Warped this summer. Super high energy, a lot of crowd involvement. For someone who has never seen you play live before, how would you describe it?
Kellin: [Laughs] I don’t really know how to describe it. We never know what’s going to happen. We have the songs set up but everything in between is different every [show]. That’s the exciting thing about our band because you never know, we can fuck the entire set up, or we could play it through perfectly all the way through. It could be hilarious, it could be serious, you know. It really just depends on the night.
DCML: Do you have any songs you really like playing live more than others?
Jesse: “If You Can’t Hang” is probably mine.
Kellin: “Tally Up The Score” is mine for sure.
Jesse: Oh yeah, that’s a good one.
DCML: We always ask about influences. If you could name your top two, what would they be?
Kellin: I’d say Foo Fighters for sure. And lately, Acceptance, this band I’ve been listening to a lot.
Jesse: Ryan Adams and Justin Bieber.
Kellin: He’s not kidding.
Jesse: I’m not kidding.
DCML: You put out a video for, “Roger Rabbit,” earlier this month. What was the inspiration behind the video?
Kellin: We just wanted to look like ballers on a boat. Basically, again with our band, everything is completely random. If it works, it works—if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. We were like, ‘hey we want to shoot a video for this?’ [Then it was] figuring out a time when we can all be together to do because we’re all from different parts of the United States. We were going to a wedding in Michigan and decided to look for a place to shoot a video there. It just worked out.
DCML: Have you guys played the DC-Baltimore area before?
Jesse: We’ve played Baltimore before.
Kellin: Yeah, where was that?
Jesse: Ottobar, I think.
Kellin: Oh yeah, with the upstairs area, we’ve played there before.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we chatted a little bit about the weather and possible upcoming show cancellations. Thankfully, the rain held off long enough for the show to go on as planned. Sleeping with Sirens put on a short, but incredible set that had the crowd off its feet, becoming downright rowdy at times. Set list favorites included both “Tally Up The Score” and “If You Can’t Hang.” Thank you to Kellin Quinn and Jesse Lawson for taking the time to talk to us. If you haven’t checked out Sleeping With Sirens, do it now.
